Description

Indian Naan Bread is a soft, leavened flatbread that is popular in Indian cuisine. It is typically made with flour, yogurt, and yeast, resulting in a fluffy texture with a slight chewiness. Naan bread is traditionally baked in a tandoor oven, but it can also be cooked on a stovetop or grill.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons plain yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons melted ghee or butter
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • Additional flour for dusting
  • Optional toppings: minced garlic, chopped cilantro, nigella seeds

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve the sugar in warm water. Sprinkle the yeast over the water and let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the activated yeast mixture, yogurt, and melted ghee or butter.
  3. Mix everything together until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours until it doubles in size.
  5. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into equal-sized portions. Roll each portion into a ball.
  6. Preheat a skillet or griddle over medium-high heat.
  7. Roll out each ball of dough into a thin oval or round shape, about 1/4 inch thick.
  8. Place the rolled-out dough onto the hot skillet or griddle. Cook for about 1-2 minutes on each side until it puffs up and develops golden brown spots.
  9. Optional: Brush the cooked naan bread with melted butter and sprinkle with toppings like minced garlic, chopped cilantro, or nigella seeds.
  10. Serve warm and enjoy with your favorite Indian dishes.

Notes

  • You can use a pizza stone or baking steel in the oven to mimic the heat of a tandoor for a more authentic naan bread.
  • Leftover naan bread can be stored in an airtight container and reheated in a toaster or oven.
