Crispy Oven Fried Chicken

  • Author: recipstep
  • Total Time: 50 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Description

This Crispy Oven Fried Chicken offers all the flavor and crunch of classic fried chicken but is baked to golden perfection in the oven. It’s seasoned with a blend of spices and coated in breadcrumbs for a crunchy, juicy bite, making it a healthier alternative to traditional fried chicken.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 bone-in chicken thighs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional for spice)
  • Cooking spray or olive oil spray

Instructions

  • Marinate the chicken: Place the chicken thighs in a bowl and cover with buttermilk. Let marinate for at least 30 minutes, or up to 4 hours for more flavor.
  • Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a wire rack.
  • Prepare the coating: In a separate bowl, combine the flour, panko breadcrumbs, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, salt, and cayenne pepper (if using).
  • Coat the chicken: Remove the chicken from the buttermilk and shake off excess. Dredge each piece in the breadcrumb mixture, pressing to adhere.
  • Bake the chicken: Place the coated chicken on the prepared baking sheet and spray generously with cooking spray. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the chicken is golden brown and cooked through (internal temperature should reach 165°F/75°C).
  • Serve: Let the chicken rest for 5 minutes before serving. Enjoy with your favorite dipping sauce or side dishes.

Notes

  • For extra crispiness: Use a wire rack on the baking sheet to allow hot air to circulate around the chicken.
  • Add more spice: Increase the cayenne pepper for a spicier kick, or add hot sauce to the buttermilk marinade.
  • Use different cuts: This recipe works with chicken drumsticks, wings, or breasts as well.
