Description

A traditional Southern side dish, collard greens are slow-cooked until tender with flavorful ingredients like smoked meats, garlic, and onions. This dish is nutritious, packed with vitamins, and perfect for a hearty meal.

Ingredients

๐ŸŒฟ 1 bunch of fresh collard greens
๐Ÿฅ“ 4 slices of beef bacon, chopped
๐Ÿง… 1 medium onion, finely diced
๐Ÿง„ 3 cloves garlic, minced
๐ŸŒถ๏ธ 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (adjust to taste)
๐Ÿ— 2 cups chicken broth
๐ŸŽ 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
๐Ÿง‚ Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

Wash the collard greens thoroughly. Remove the tough stems and chop the leaves into bite-sized pieces.
In a large pot over medium heat, cook the chopped beef bacon until crispy. Add diced onions to the pot and sautรฉ until softened. Stir in minced garlic and red pepper flakes, cooking for an additional minute. Place the chopped collard greens into the pot, stirring to combine with the bacon and aromatics.
Pour in the chicken broth, ensuring it covers the collard greens. Bring the mixture to a simmer. Reduce heat to low, cover, and let it simmer for about 45 minutes or until the collard greens are tender. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Just before serving, stir in apple cider vinegar for a tangy kick.
Pro Tips:
If the collard greens are tough, you can massage them with olive oil before cooking to help tenderize.
Enjoy ๐ŸŒฟโœจ

Notes

For a vegetarian version, omit the ham hock and use vegetable broth. Serve with cornbread or rice for a complete meal.
